This article applies only to video cards that originally shipped with a specified Mac Pro or were offered as an upgrade kit by Apple. Similar cards that were not provided by Apple may have compatibility issues and you should work with the vendor of that card to confirm compatibility.

If you have a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, you can use it with a TB3 Mac mini when it comes out. As @Synchro3 mentioned, the performance loss via 1st generation Thunderbolt is not as significant as you might think. You can get creative with placement of the Mac mini and eGPU enclosure. I've shoved the Mac mini inside the AKiTiO Node in one. If bought separately, insert the graphics card into the enclosure's PCI-e slot and insert the power connectors into the card. Plug your monitor into the card, then plug the enclosure into an outlet.
